What are some of the reasons you love the classics?
For me there are lots of reasons I think they have great stories. Before there were special effects, movies had to have great stories to draw audiences.
I love the morality. In the Man in the Grey Flannel Suit, Gregory Peck chooses his family over his career. In The Best Years of Our Lives, the father tells a married man to stay away from his daughter.
I love acting. In Casablanca all the characters act well. In Roman Holiday, you can read subtle changes in facial expressions on Audrey Hepburn's face. You know what she's thinking and feeling.
I don't know how to describe it, but I cheer watching a Frank Capra movie. I love how the little guy stands up for principles against the big guy. I love that the little guy wins!
I love the comedies. A good comedy will cause you to laugh everytime you see it. Arsnic and Old Lace is like that for me. Also Harvey. I laugh everytime I watch them.

I agree with you, melphleg. I don't need special effects, just great stories and pure acting.

Yes - It was a time when story was number one and most directors were more concerned with entertaining the audience than with making themselves famous. The directors were mostly master craftsman rather than self-annointed auteurs.
